Wondering whether you are a great leader?

In the modern workplace, confidence and ambition are no longer the only attributes of a successful leader. When a team is directed by a passionate and respected leader, productivity increases, company culture improves, and employee turnover is minimized. Good business leaders know how to adjust their management style to motivate different types of people, they know how to get the best out of their employees.

Want to see how you measure up? Here are the top 5 traits of a great boss!

1. Knowledgeable & Experienced

It’s no surprise this one is high on the list. An impressive resume filled with a variety of high-ranking positions, educational achievements and charitable efforts impresses even the harshest critic. Business leaders who can utilize their knowledge and experience to find different solutions to problems will always be held in high regard.

2. Empathy

The ability to connect with people in the workplace is crucial to success. A study by the Center for Creative Leadership states, “leaders today need to be more person-focused and be able to work with those not just in the next cubicle, but also with those in other buildings or other countries.” The report summarized that a good leader knows how to connect and empathize with people from a variety of different cultural backgrounds and personal experiences in order to retain talented individuals.

3. Charisma

To be a good leader you need to be likeable. It is human nature that people are more likely to follow the lead of people they like. An article in the Harvard business review stated that “charismatic leaders have the ability to inspire others towards higher levels of performance and to instill deep levels of commitment, trust, and satisfaction.” (2017)  A charismatic leader gives the entire organization confidence to achieve their goals.

4. Honesty

Honesty is important in many relationships in life, including the one between a manager and their employees. Honesty is linked to trust, if you are honest with your employees, they will trust you. It takes years to build trust and seconds to destroy it. Dishonest business dealings are a sure-fire way to ruin the culture of an organization and the reputation of the business amongst customers.

5. Positive & Motivational

Happiness is contagious! People are drawn to people who are positive, upbeat and generally pleasant to be around. A great leader exerts incredible energy, which encourages individuals to do their best and work towards company goals.

Whether you are a brand-new manager or a seasoned CEO, there is always time to assess your leadership style.  A great leader is always willing to learn and evolve in order to guide their team on the path to success.

“A leader is one who knows the way, goes the way, and shows the way.” – John C. Maxwell
